Procedente de los escombros de la fachada del Templo V de la Gran Acrópolis. Debió formar parte de la decoración exterior del edificio.Las aves acuáticas, abundantes en el Golfo de México, tuvieron un especial simbolismo en la cultura maya, debido a sus extraordinarias condiciones biológicas. La escultura de sorprendente realismo se relaciona con el espacio celeste, y al mismo tiempo con los ambientes acuáticos del inframundo.
